Sea to Sky Diversity Heritage project
What is the Sea to Sky Diversity Heritage project?
We're developing an online resource to show how diverse communities have contributed historically to the development and civic, social, cultural, and economic life of our Sea to Sky communities.
We're documenting the history of racially diverse groups in the Sea to Sky region by collecting statistics, reports, stories, anecdotes, family and oral histories, and cultural traditions The aim is to create a resource that community members, organizations and institutions can use to learn about how diverse community members have contributed to our region, but, most importantly, something that people can continue to add to.
Why are we doing this?
We want Sea to Sky communities to know more about the historical contributions of local racially diverse populations, and to grow appreciation of not only the cultures and traditions they bring to the region but also the skills and contributions and value they add. We want (all local residents) to recognize these skills and values and contributions, building a new view of the Sea to Sky, its communities, and its development.
What do we need from you?
We're inviting Sea to Sky residents, families, businesses and other organizations to contact us with any stories, anecdotes or memories that can help us build the picture of how racial diversity has contributed to the region...
Did your family settle in the Sea to Sky one, two or more generations ago? Do you or your family have memories or stories of how they came and settled in the region? What was the community like when your family arrived? What traditions and customs did they bring over and how did they settle down? Do you have photos you're willing to share?
Do you know about other diverse community members who were important in the local business, civic, or social areas? Did they start or own a business? Did they hold public office? Did they donate to the local community? We're especially interested in hearing from individuals/families who can help us track how diverse populations have been part of the development of our region.
Be the change, be part of something big!
Please reach out and help document the history of the contributions of diverse people in the community. Every story, every memory, every picture builds the fabric of our shared heritage...
